She – Chapter Three

He was chained and forced to kneel before Lord Thanos. A boy with black disheveled hair, his garments were torn and dirty after his encounter with the shapeshifting species. The Chitauri wanted nothing more than to eat him, but Thanos wanted to know just why the boy was found on the Chitauri spawning grounds. Thanos would likely play with him before inventing a new way to take a life.

Within the frame of the scepter, I felt a gentle hum. I knew the sensation, it was the tesseract and it had awoken. Finally, after all this time, it emerged from its slumber and was responding to me. I swelled in excitement and blue wisps exploded from the scepter, the outburst was not lost on Loki.

Loki’s face had grown paler as of late. Dark circles had etched themselves into his soft face. It was I who put them there. I worked long and hard on Loki, twisting him to my plans. Yet, for all my manipulations and late-night trysts, Loki had a way of rebelling against me. He was laying on his bed reading. His eyes scanned the old book with a tenacity of a zealot. Loki paused his reading to look at me.

“Is it awake?” he asked.

The elation of the tesseract’s presence was quickly abated with concern. Loki had yet to reveal the entirety of his plan. I wasn’t certain the plan was as solidified as he made it appear to Thanos. I couldn’t speak to him in this form, I merely suggested.

“We should get things underway then.”

He braced the scepter, and immediately waved off the tendrils of my influence.

“You’ll know as much as you need to know. Activate the tesseract.”

I did as Loki commanded. He held fast to me as I summoned the tesseract. We were teleported together. The energy in the tesseract was harmful for Loki. His face contorted in pain for the few moments we traveled through the energy stream. When we landed on the other side, smoke rose from Loki and he smiled menacingly.

After obtaining a few allies, we left with the tesseract. The euphoria I felt when reuniting with the tesseract rejuvenated my waning zeal. It had been so long since I encountered another like myself that I put too much of myself into the Asgardian. I don’t want the boy, not really. He is simply means to an end. Still, a slight tug suggested otherwise.

That night, as he slept, I manifested into a tangible person and waited at the doorstep of his subconscious. I learned long ago that if I tried to sneak in uninvited, he would put up more blockades. I waited for him to respond to me.

“You’re beginning to respect my privacy.”

“I never meant to overstep you, I just wish to be close to you.” I moved toward him, but Loki stopped me.

“Have I wronged you?” I asked him.

Loki’s brow furrowed and he shook his head gently. “You’ve proved invaluable for the invasion of Midgard.”

“Is that it?”

When did he turn away from me? I looked in his eyes and saw something more. Something he didn’t want to tell me.

“The next part of this plan will rely heavily on you.”

I swallowed and steeled myself. “What will you have me do?”

“We’re going to be captured.”

My startled expression made him laugh mischievously. Loki explained the plan to me. I didn’t approve, it was reckless and playing into their hands. Loki was already on the cusp of breaking free from my influence, would he return to me if that link was broken?

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” I told him.

“It’s the perfect idea. I just need you to work your magic on the giant green monstrosity, and the world is ours.”
Ours.
“And when the world is indeed ours?”

A flicker of hesitation swept through him, and I knew he didn’t know any more than I did.
Loki was under the impression that Thanos would be willing to let him keep me. It would go against his grand scheme to reunite the infinity stones. It would be impossible to take on Thanos with just Loki. Perhaps he would allow Loki to keep me until he had collected all the others.

Loki feinted an attempt of global dominance and the Avengers saved the day. I was pulled from Loki’s grasp and soon found myself on a lab table. My mission was to incite the anger and frustrations of the avengers, provoking one specifically. Loki described him as a hulking green beast, but I saw no such thing.

It wasn’t until I overheard a conversation between two scientists in the lab that I realized one of them was the creature Loki told me of. A mild-mannered man, he experimented with Gama-Rays it seemed. I looked for loopholes, but felt nothing but mutual respect growing in the lab. I had to work with. I wanted Loki, but he was somewhere else on the ship.

I knew the only way to be reunited with him was to take down the ship that held us. People came and went from the lab, but it wasn’t until a tall blond man walked in that the air began to change. The scientists were uncovering S.H.I.E.L.D’s true motives, the blond man had reluctantly drawn the same conclusion.

A few more people walked in, but it wasn’t until I saw Thor that I felt true motivation.
If anyone had the ability to sever my link with Loki, it would be Thor. If he got to Loki, there was a real possibility that everything we had worked for would unravel. Did I care more about the plan failing or losing Loki? I couldn’t tell anymore. The anger boiled inside me. My aura expanded and soon, I felt a hand on the scepter. It was Dr. Banner who answered the call of my rage.

I never saw Loki again. My link with Hawk-eye broke, and not long after, my link with Loki also broke. I can’t say for certain when it happened, but I know it was of will and not in death. The vessel went crashing down, and I went with it. I knew Loki would never seek me out again, so I waited for a new wielder. Perhaps Thanos would reclaim me. My aching, metaphorical heart became inactive with each passing day. How could he just leave me here?

It was a strange doctor who salvaged me from the wreckage. I spent even more time in a lab. The Avengers raided the compound and I found myself in the hands of Dr. Banner and Mr. Stark once more. They tinkered with the scepter, looking to learn my secrets. I could see why Loki wanted to subjugate humans. They were petty, vile, creatures with little regard for others. Stark sought to protect them from themselves, an impossible task.

And in this, I found a new opportunity. I would pick up where Loki left off. I would destroy the Avengers and every other human on this pathetic planet.
